Weimar is a small town in eastern Germany with an unexpected, yet also almost unbearable amount of history. This series of paintings reinterprets portraits of people who have significantly influenced Weimar‘s history and culture, or whose biographies have been significantly influenced by the city. I selected portraits based on older paintings or photographs and edited them to create a cohesive and timeless representation. By removing period-specific details such as haircuts and clothing, each portrait focuses on the human essence and makes the figures comparable across different eras. The series includes a wide range of figures, from famous artists such as Anni and Josef Albers, to literary figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, to composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Franz Liszt. It also delves into the darker aspects of Weimar‘s history by deliberately including war criminals such as
Ilse Koch and Fritz Sauckel and placing them - through the alphabetical order of the paintings - in the middle of the social tapestry. Each painting is an indispensable part of the overall set, emphasizing the collective influence of the sum of each individual on Weimar. The aim of this series is to provide a comprehensive and objective overview of Weimar’s cultural heritage.
